Yes, we're being blogged in one of the most popular computer netzines, Zdnet.be and Zdnet.nl. For those readers, i will give some tips to where to start netlabelism.
++ If you're a music fan, you can start to download music by the style of music you like. Warning: out of respect for the artist, i have no direct links to the files, rather a link to the release page, so you also have info about the artist, and you can download the cover as well.
++ If you want to browse by yourselve through the wonderful world of netlabels, there is a short subjective list of the most important netlabels to start.
++ If you want to read about netlabels because you're a student, journalist, researcher, i've compiled a bibliograpy. Because most of the netlabels work with a Creative Commons license, so they can distribute music without lawyers, i've also collected information about this license in the same link.
++ If you have no time, but want to have a quick overview of netlabels, you can download very good compilations from phlow magazine and Blocsonic. In the future netlabelism.net is going to review some classic netlabel compilations, and we are also going to set up our own line of compilations by style. You may expect the first release in october, a compilation of the best of electro in the netlabel scene.
++ If you have lots of time, you can navigate in netlabel world with all the links in the navigation section at the left.
++ For the rest, you can do a search on this blog via the search box at the top right.

national public broadcaster starts a social site

This came under my attention via the official CC blog: "The ABC, Australia's national public broadcaster, just launched a CC-friendly social media space, Pool, which is designed to provide a "place for creative content makers to upload their work, publish and collaborate". Pool offers users the ability to upload their content - whatever the medium - under the full suite of CC licences (as well as All Rights Reserved) for other users to reuse and share."
So, this public broadcaster gives a good example of keeping public content open for the public. But i'm afraid there is still a lot of work to do: public broadcasters have to put all their content in the public, because they are being paid by the tax payers. So, all content must be given back to the people who funded it, not by selling it, but by putting it on the internet with an open license. Compare it with open source in governmental institutions.

commercial or not commercial?

40 years ago, in the magical year 1968, rock was about rebellion, anti-capitalism and non-conformism. Nowadays, rock seems to have lost its spirit in favour of money and clever marketeers, resulting in mainstream alternative shit on the radio.
This clip has nothing to do with netlabels, but it could have been in those days, when all these bands were unknown and exploring the musical limits with no commercial purpose, but rather freeing the spirits and minds.
31 august 1968, Pink Floyd at Kastival in Kasterlee, and that is in the middle of nowhere in Belgium. Earlier that year, they also passed Leuven on their tour: anyone been there, in the 'Rijschool'?

Phonocake 50th release on a ... cassette!

Phonocake releases 50th sonic cake "Jugendsünden / Follies of youth", a compilation, on a cassette tape: "Matching the old school spirit that comes with the 10-years-review we decided to present this release only on cassette. It's not the best way in distribution, especially when being a netlabel, but we also want to show the disadvantages of limited media."

Cake bakers are: Madstyle, Bad Comfort, Al Magnifico, Trans Alp, Sören Matschiste, parmon, Peter Venus, AAA, Deftype, Alec Troniq, Noise-Beyond-Silence and Granufunk.

If you happen to be in, or go to Berlin, be sure to walk into "das Breipott" and order some of the delicious rice snacks, download some netlabel stuff, and have a good time. This fresh, colourful bar, snackhouse started 14th of june this year, and offers on one hand a comprehensive menu of snacks based on cooked rice, and on the other hand, one can download "Gema"-free music (Gema is the German collecting society) on terminals, specifically configured for the purpose of downloading. Although the music is published under a Creative Commons license, the Breipott team will doublecheck the artists and tunes on their Gema status before they put them on their public computers.
You can find "Breipott" and its enthusiastic team in Skalitzer Straße 81, and that is the Kreuzberg 36 department of Berlin.

You can make and publish your own favicon under a CC licence. Even the link is very CC:

A favicon is the little icon at the left in the box where you fill in the url, or the little icon in the corner of a tab. It's very easy: draw an icon, then download it for your website. If you want to publish it, you have to register, and then you can chose the CC licence. You can also upload an existing image, drawing, picture up to 4 mb, and Favicon will make you an icon.

Jamison Young & The X-Files

Jamison Young appears with 1 track on the soundtrack of the new feature film “The X-Files: I Want to Believe“. Young releases all his music under a CC licence, and he travels a lot to play in local pubs and gigs, also to discuss about CC.

Update: this song is not included on the soundtrack, read Jamison's blog thoughts about that fact.

On july 1 Last.fm launched the "Artist Royalty Program". This lets artists on Last.fm accrue royalties whenever their songs are streamed. This affects only independent artists, ie. musicians not affiliated with a label or royalty collection agency.
If you haven't done already, upload your music to Last.fm, otherwise head straight to the Music Manager, to sign up. But remember, it's only rock'n'roll.

Just added three new links: CCalm Down, Relax. CCalm Down, Relax is "A weblog on netlabels, independent record labels and artists, Creative Commons".
The second is a link to a "List of projects using Creative Commons licenses". This is a list of CC-licensed projects in several media like journalism, cartography, movies, news, music, ... It's a wiki, so you can add your own contribution.

European Commission acknowledges open music under Creative Commons

After MUP (netlabelism.net & Netwaves) did some talks with officials from Saïd El Khadraoui's (Sp.a) department, the latter has posed a question at the European Commission about the "equitable remuneration" and Creative Commons music. The Commission answered that an artist is free to reject the equitable remuneration. This means one does not have to pay this equitable remuneration when he gives a party with Creative Commons music. (Performer only needs to be the composer, but this is true for most of CC music). Check out the Websaid from Saïd (Dutch).

How to start a netlabel?

The famous Italian blogger Eldino had some time ago a very interesting blog called "Come aprire una netlabel" (How to start a netlabel), but unfortunately it was in Italian. Now, another blogger, Barefoot Melt (Envisioning Toad), has made an attempt to translate the manual in English (with a little help from Google Translate) and made some thoughts about it. In this dutch radioshow host Aad van Nieuwkerk had a long interview with Jan and Marco Raaphorst about CC and Netwaves. new platform for musicians in Europe

Under the bombastic subtitle "The European Digital Music Revolution" a new web community is just born, Younison:
"Younison is the first European Pressure Platform that gives Artists, DJ/producers, Managers and Organizers in the Music Industry a voice to speak up with and to actually change the way our business will be organised in the future."

In the FAQ there's an explanation for the subtitle:
"What do you mean with the Digital Music Revolution?
Besides being a great new tool for everyone in the music industry to contact each other, share friends and colleages, comment on professional experiences and even have the possibiliy to visualy compare each others calendar in order to fine tune meetings in bands and making life easier for artists, managers and organisers, Younison aims at being the first pressure platform .

the balls of Brussels

The balls of Brussels - the Atomium - were built for Expo '58 and exist 50 years. The architect of the project Waterkeyn decided to protect 'his' concept by putting his rights to the collecting society Sabam. So, everytime someone wants to put a photo of the Atomium on his website, he has to pay about 90,00 euro/month. One estimates that the income of all payments to Sabam ammounts to about 30.000 euro/year, and this goes to the heir of the late architect (he died in 2005) till + 70 years after his death = 2075. Because this year is the anniversary of Expo '58, the organisation of the Belgian heritage in Mechelen planned to do actions whereby people would send their old pictures of those old days, and to put them on the web, blogs, ... Because of the Sabam rule, the organisation did a playful call ("cultural guerilla") for 100 people to help 'photoshop' away the balls on all the photographs.
Sabam replied that this year is an exception, and people can publish for 1 year the images, as long it's in a non commercial way.

Now i wonder, who ever paid this building, and who owned it then (and now). I mean, if this building is paid by taxes, i should think that the belgian state owns this building and all it's plans, and that the architect made it as an employee of the same state, and has no right to put a copyright on plans made for his employer. Can anyone help me sort this out?

"Just thought it might be nice to mention this, because I've noticed the rate of netlabel adoption is quite rapidly increasing. Some brief stats:

- 850 netlabels, in total
- increasing by around 25 netlabels per month.

- 11,990 separate 'items', that is singles, EPs, or albums
- increasing by 5/10 items per day (!)

Not bad at all! Obviously, the upload system for the Archive is not the MOST userfriendly in the world, but the structure of netlabels (collections, items, download counts) works really well for microlabels. So kudos to everyone at the Archive for getting everything running smoothly."

netlabelism.net is very very proud to announce its next musical achievement. The mixtape netlabel OP3N sent netlabelism.net an invitation to make a mixtape, and this resulted in "Netwaves: mixed emotions". This mix is not a showcase of DJ skills in the first place, but rather an anthology of musical pearls hidden in the vast amount of tunes on the internet. The songs are alternated by field recordings, taped in Louvain, a little university town in Belgium. Besides being the hometown of netlabelism.net, it is also famous for its beer Stella Artois.

The mix was compiled by embe, with a little help from TransistorLab.

Sound Copyright says: "Copyright in sound recordings currently lasts for 50 years. Yet the recording industry continues to demand that this term be extended. ... But term extension would be an injustice to European musicians and musical culture, and may harm our economy.
... Copyright is a bargain. In exchange for their investment in creating and distributing sound recordings to the public, copyright holders are granted a limited monopoly during which are allowed to control the use of those recordings. This includes the right to pursue anyone who uses their recordings without permission. But when this time is up, these works join Goethe, Hugo and Shakespeare in the proper place for all human culture – the public domain.
... Seminal soul, reggae, and rock and roll recordings will soon be freed from legal restrictions, allowing anyone (including the performers themselves and their heirs) to preserve, reissue, and remix them.
... Major record labels want to keep control of sound recordings well beyond the current 50 year term so that they can continue to make marginal profits from the few recordings that are still commercially viable half a century after they were laid down.
...

If you agree that copyright term on sound recordings should not be extended past 50 years, please, sign this petition today. Together, we can defeat copyright term extension."

Sound Copyright is an initiative by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and the Open Rights Group (ORG).

I must have missed this important one somehow: Phlow magazine has released a "Best of Netlabels" vol. 1 in january already, and now there's a vol. 2 peeping at their website.

The goal is to bring every month an anthology of the best tunes around the world. The title of the series is "Their Finest Hour". We are very happy with this initiative, because there's tons and tons of music on the internet and netlabels, and we welcome every effort to filter and organise this stuff. Thanks Phlow! The releases are made with much care, love and respect. There's streaming, download per tune, zip-file and a nice cover.
